Fenyves, a primary care doctor at Weill Cornell Medicine, recently admitted he was wrong to support vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI was initially supportive of Covid vaccine mandates in the Fall of 2021. At the time, I was told that Covid vaccines don\u2019t only protect the individual receiving the vaccine, but they also benefit the community by reducing spread of the virus,\u201d Fenyves\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sensiblemed.substack.com\/p\/you-have-no-mandate-a-preemptive\">wrote on the Substack Sensible Medicine<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Convinced that mandatory vaccination would create a \u201cwall of immunity\u201d that would bring the pandemic to an end more quickly, Fenyves said it seemed \u201creasonable to prioritize societal welfare over individual autonomy,\u201d noting that early clinical trials of Pfizer\u2019s vaccine were shown to stop 95 percent of infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSurely a vaccine that prevents almost all infections would halt community spread, right? Wrong,\u201d he writes. \u201cPerhaps there was a time when Covid vaccines could significantly reduce community transmission, but that time was short-lived, and the virus quickly evolved and learned to evade vaccine-induced immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Fenyves, his awakening moment came in December 2021, when Portugal experienced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/portugals-covid-19-cases-hit-new-highs-hospitals-not-strained-2021-12-28\/\">a massive surge of Covid<\/a>&nbsp;despite a vaccination rate of more than 90 percent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Fenyves, a primary care physician in New York City who specializes in internal medicine, seems to have learned this lesson.
