In a Massachusetts school district,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.03.20.21253976v1.full.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">researchers found<\/a>&nbsp;that plexiglass dividers with side walls in the main office were impeding air flow.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7021e1.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A study looking at schools in Georgia<\/a>&nbsp;found that desk barriers had little effect on the spread of the coronavirus compared with ventilation improvements and masking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the pandemic,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.5694\/mja12.11750\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a study<\/a>&nbsp;published in 2014 found that office cubicle dividers were among the factors that may have contributed to disease transmission during a tuberculosis outbreak in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British researchers\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/emg-role-of-screens-and-barriers-in-mitigating-covid-19-transmission-1-july-2021\" target=\"_blank\">have conducted modeling studies<\/a>\u00a0simulating what happens when a person on one side of a barrier \u2014 like a customer in a store \u2014 exhales particles while speaking or coughing under various ventilation conditions. The screen is more effective when the person coughs, because the larger particles have greater momentum and hit the barrier. But when a person speaks, the screen doesn\u2019t trap the exhaled particles \u2014 which just float around it.
